What is CUET Exam? Full Form, Eligibility, Syllabus, Registration & Exam Date

What is CUET Exam?

CUET, or the Common University Entrance Test, is a national-level entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at central, state, deemed, and private universities across India.

Before CUET was introduced, every university held its own separate entrance test or relied purely on Class 12 board marks for admission. This meant students had to fill dozens of different forms, prepare for multiple exam patterns, and often lost out on good colleges simply because their board’s marking style was stricter than another’s.

CUET changed that. It works on a “One Nation, One Entrance Exam” model — a single test whose score is accepted by 250+ universities, including Delhi University (DU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and a large number of state and private universities. Instead of your board exam marks deciding your fate, your performance in one standardised, NCERT-based test now plays the central role in your admission.

In short: if you’ve finished (or are finishing) Class 12 and want to study at a well-known Indian university, CUET is very likely the exam you need to appear for.

What is CUET Full Form?

The CUET full form is Common University Entrance Test. It comes in two versions:

  • CUET UG – for undergraduate admissions (Class 12 pass-outs)
  • CUET PG – for postgraduate admissions (graduates)

Both are conducted by the NTA, but they run as separate exams with different registration windows, syllabi, and exam dates. For most first-time readers searching “what is CUET exam,” it’s the UG version that’s relevant, since it applies right after Class 12.

CUET Exam Date 2027

CUET UG is held once a year, and the cycle for the year ahead usually looks like this, based on the pattern NTA has followed since the exam began:

Event Expected Timeline
Official Notification & Information Bulletin January 2027
Online Registration Begins January 2027
Last Date to Register February 2027
Application Correction Window February 2027
City Intimation Slip April 2027
Admit Card Release May 2027
CUET UG Exam May 2027
Result Declaration June–July 2027

Important note: NTA has not released the official CUET UG 2027 notification yet, so the dates above are indicative, based on previous years’ trends. The most recent completed cycle, CUET UG 2026, was held between May and June 2026 in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode across 380+ cities in India and 26 cities abroad. Always cross-check final dates on the official website — cuet.nta.nic.in — once the new bulletin is out.

What is CUET Eligibility?

CUET eligibility has two layers — a general eligibility set by NTA, and course-specific eligibility set by each participating university.

General CUET UG eligibility:

  • The candidate must have passed or be appearing for the Class 12 examination (or its equivalent) from a recognised board.
  • There is generally no fixed upper age limit to appear for CUET.
  • Candidates from any stream (Science, Commerce, Arts) can apply — CUET UG now allows students to choose subjects for the test regardless of what they studied in Class 12.
  • There’s no restriction on the number of subject combinations you can attempt, within the overall limit set by NTA for that year.

University-specific eligibility:

Each university sets its own additional criteria for individual courses — for example, a minimum percentage in Class 12, specific subjects that must have been studied, or category-based relaxations. Because these vary widely from one university and course to another, it’s important to check the admission page of each university you’re targeting before applying, rather than relying only on the general CUET criteria.

What is CUET Syllabus?

The CUET syllabus is designed to be fair to students from every board, which is why it’s built entirely around the NCERT Class 12 curriculum. The test is divided into three main sections:

  1. Language Section – Tests reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar in the language(s) a candidate chooses (13 language options are typically offered, including English and Hindi).
  2. Domain-Specific Subjects – Subject knowledge based on the Class 12 NCERT syllabus. Candidates choose subjects depending on the course they want to pursue (for example, Physics or Accountancy for a science or commerce-related programme).
  3. General Test – Covers general knowledge, current affairs, logical and quantitative reasoning. This section is required by many (though not all) universities as part of their admission criteria.

A few points worth remembering:

  • The total number of domain subjects offered has been trimmed over recent cycles, with subjects like Entrepreneurship, Teaching Aptitude, and Legal Studies discontinued in some years — always check the latest list in the year’s official bulletin.
  • Each subject paper typically runs for a fixed duration of about 60 minutes.
  • Since the syllabus barely changes year to year, students can safely begin preparation using their NCERT Class 12 textbooks even before the official syllabus PDF for the new cycle is released.

What is CUET Registration Process?

Registering for CUET UG is entirely online. Here’s the step-by-step process:

  1. Visit the official portal – Go to cuet.nta.nic.in or the specific registration link shared in that year’s information bulletin.
  2. New registration – Sign up using your mobile number and email ID to generate your application number and password.
  3. Fill the application form – Enter personal details, academic qualifications, and choose your exam city preferences.
  4. Select subjects – Pick the language, domain subjects, and General Test (if required) based on the courses and universities you plan to apply to. Choose carefully, since this decides which universities and programmes you become eligible for.
  5. Upload documents – This usually includes a scanned photograph, signature, and category or PwD certificate (if applicable), as per the specified size and format.
  6. Pay the application fee – Fees vary by category (General/OBC/SC/ST/PwD) and the number of subjects chosen. Payment can be made online through net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI.
  7. Submit and download confirmation – Review all details carefully before final submission, since corrections are allowed only during a limited correction window later. Save and print the confirmation page for your records.

Tip: Read the official Information Bulletin thoroughly before you start filling the form — it lists exact eligibility, fee structure, and document specifications for that year, which can change slightly from the previous cycle.

What is CUET Admit Card?

The CUET admit card is the official document you must carry to your exam centre — without it, entry is not allowed. Here’s what to know:

  • It’s usually released around 3–10 days before the exam date, after the city intimation slip has already informed you which city your centre will be in.
  • It’s available for download only through the candidate’s login on the official NTA CUET portal, using the application number and date of birth or password.
  • The admit card carries your exam date, shift timing, reporting time, exam centre address, and important instructions for exam day.
  • Along with the admit card, candidates must carry a valid original photo ID (such as Aadhaar card, school ID, or passport) to the centre.

Always double-check your name, photograph, category, and exam city on the admit card as soon as it’s released, and contact NTA immediately through the official helpline if you spot any error.

CUET Result

Once the exam is conducted across all scheduled shifts, NTA processes the responses using a normalisation formula (since the test runs across multiple shifts and difficulty levels can vary slightly) and then releases the result as a scorecard.

  • The CUET UG result is usually declared within 4–8 weeks of the exam concluding, though this timeline has varied across years.
  • The scorecard shows your normalised score in each subject you appeared for — this is what universities use for their own admission counselling and merit lists.
  • CUET does not declare an all-India rank the way some other exams do; instead, individual universities use the CUET score to run their own admission or counselling process.
  • After the result, keep an eye on each target university’s official website for their specific counselling schedule, cut-offs, and seat allotment rounds.

Why CUET Matters for Your Admission

Beyond just being “another entrance exam,” CUET has genuinely reshaped how undergraduate admissions work in India:

  • One test, many universities – You no longer need to prepare for and travel to multiple entrance exams for different universities.
  • A level playing field – Students from state boards and CBSE now compete on the same standardised test, rather than admissions depending heavily on which board tends to award higher marks.
  • Wider reach – With test centres in hundreds of cities, including many smaller towns, CUET has made it easier for students outside metro cities to access top universities.
  • Flexibility of subjects – You can choose a domain subject for CUET that’s different from what you studied in Class 12, opening doors to new academic paths.

Quick Tips to Prepare for CUET

  • Build your preparation around NCERT Class 12 textbooks first — the entire domain syllabus comes from there.
  • Practice previous years’ CUET question papers to get familiar with the question style and time pressure.
  • Since each subject paper is time-bound (around 60 minutes), practice full-length mock tests under timed conditions rather than only studying topic-wise.
  • Keep a close watch on the official NTA website once the notification is out — dates for registration, correction window, and admit card release move fast, and missing one can cost you a full year.

FAQs on CUET Exam

6. How many times can I attempt CUET?

CUET UG is conducted once a year, and there is generally no restriction on how many times a candidate can appear across different years, as long as they meet the eligibility criteria for that cycle.

7. Does CUET have negative marking?

Yes, CUET typically follows a marking scheme of +5 for a correct answer and -1 for an incorrect answer, though candidates should always confirm the exact scheme in that year’s official information bulletin, as it can be revised.

8. Where can I check the official CUET notification and results?

All official updates, including the notification, syllabus, admit card, and result, are released only on the NTA’s official CUET portal — cuet.nta.nic.in.
